Chief Sustainability Officer Honored with Climate Leadership Award

The Postal Service is proud to congratulate Chief Sustainability Officer Thomas Day, who was recognized for his exemplary leadership in response to climate change, with a 2016 Individual Climate Leadership Award.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) —in collaboration with the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and The Climate Registry—presented awards to 13 organizations, three partnerships, and one individual during the fifth annual Climate Leadership Conference in Seattle this month. Day received the Individual Leadership Award for his extraordinary leadership in directing the Postal Service’s response to climate change through engagement of peers and partners.

“I am proud to distinguish Thomas Day for his outstanding actions and dedication to reduce harmful carbon pollution that leads to climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy during the award presentation. “Tom is leading the way toward a healthy environment, and demonstrates that meeting challenges of a changing climate can be done.”

Purpose of the Climate Leadership Awards

The Climate Leadership Awards honor corporate, organizational, and individual leaders managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in internal operations and throughout the supply chain, as well as integrating climate resilience into operating strategies.

“At USPS, we actively cultivate workplace sustainability knowledge through training and information sharing,” said Day. “This award reflects our organization’s commitment to creating sustainability driven culture.”

How the Climate Leadership Conference Works

The Climate Leadership Conference gathers forward-thinking leaders from business, government, academia, and the non-profit community to explore energy and climate-related solutions, introduce new opportunities, and provide support to leaders taking action on climate change.

Day describes the Postal Service’s sustainability program as one that recognizes the value of people, the planet, and profit—or “the triple-bottom-line” as he calls it.

“By addressing environmental and social concerns organizationally, sustainability supports our business,” explains Day. “Sustainability means identifying long-term strategies that integrate financial, social, and environmental performance. Ensuring USPS is proactive about environmental stewardship is not only doing the right thing, it can help avoid costly consequences.”
